Unofficial LinkedIn APIs, LinkedIn's own API and Datacircle compared
LinkedIn's own API returns another member's profile only to developers LinkedIn approves. So developers look for an unofficial one. We compare three ways to get another member's LinkedIn profile as JSON: an open source library that signs in to LinkedIn as you, LinkedIn's own API, and Datacircle.
We pass your request to a LinkedIn profile API, so we aren't LinkedIn's API either. You send the profile's URL with your Datacircle key: no LinkedIn login, no cookies, no browser.
Right now we have 3 live LinkedIn profile APIs that we trust: Up2Data, HarvestAPI and Fetchin. You send the provider's own request to api.datacircle.dev, with your Datacircle key. That's the only change. $2.375 per 1,000 through Up2Data (a profile it can't find is free), $3.70 per 1,000 through HarvestAPI. $1.485 per 1,000 through Fetchin, a profile it can't find billed the same. HarvestAPI bills a profile it can't find at $2.30 per 1,000.
The three ways, side by side
| Way | You need | Cost | Risks |
|---|---|---|---|
| An open source library | Your LinkedIn account's password or session cookies | Nothing to pay, but each call runs on your LinkedIn account | LinkedIn may challenge or ban your account, their READMEs warn |
| LinkedIn's own API | LinkedIn's approval | Its Profile API page lists no price | LinkedIn may not approve you |
| Datacircle | Your Datacircle key | From $1.485 per 1,000 profiles | A 429 at Up2Data's daily limit, a 402 when your balance can't cover the call |
Other hosted APIs also take an API key and charge per profile. Our LinkedIn profile API pricing comparison lists their prices per 1,000 profiles.
Open source libraries that sign in as you
The two libraries you find first are linkedin-api for Python and linkedin-private-api for Node.js. Both sign in to LinkedIn with your account and call Voyager, the private API behind linkedin.com. They cost nothing, but each call runs on your LinkedIn account.
| Library | Language | Signs in with | Last release |
|---|---|---|---|
| linkedin-api | Python | Your LinkedIn email and password | 2.3.1, November 7, 2024 |
| linkedin-private-api | Node.js | Your LinkedIn email and password, or your session cookies | 1.1.2, April 28, 2022 |
linkedin-api sends your email and password to LinkedIn and keeps the cookie it gets back. Its README says: "This library is not officially supported by LinkedIn. Using this library might violate LinkedIn's Terms of Service. Use it at your own risk." Its tests need "A valid Linkedin user account (don't use your personal account, if possible)". In a test, LinkedIn answered with a challenge after about 900 requests in one session, its README says. Its GitHub repository and its docs site return 404 today, but PyPI still has it.
linkedin-private-api needs "only a working LinkedIn account", its README says, and adds: "Note that using this API might cause your account being banned."
Two paid products, Linked API and Unipile, also run on LinkedIn accounts you connect: see our Linked API alternative and Unipile alternative.
LinkedIn's own API
Its Profile API page says: “The use of this API is restricted to those developers approved by LinkedIn.” The page lists no price. Our LinkedIn API alternative lists what LinkedIn's API gives every developer, and what needs LinkedIn's approval.
A LinkedIn profile through Datacircle
You send the provider's own request to api.datacircle.dev, with your Datacircle key. That's the only change. Up2Data's request, at $2.375 per 1,000:
curl -X POST "https://api.datacircle.dev/v1/profiles/enrich" \
-H "Authorization: Token $DATACIRCLE_API_KEY" \
-H "X-Data-Provider: up2data" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"url": "https://www.linkedin.com/in/williamhgates"}'Or HarvestAPI's, at $3.70 per 1,000:
curl "https://api.datacircle.dev/linkedin/profile?url=https://www.linkedin.com/in/williamhgates" \
-H "Authorization: Token $DATACIRCLE_API_KEY" \
-H "X-Data-Provider: harvestapi"Or Fetchin's, at $1.485 per 1,000:
curl "https://api.datacircle.dev/api/v1/profile?profileUrlOrUrn=https://www.linkedin.com/in/williamhgates" \
-H "Authorization: Token $DATACIRCLE_API_KEY" \
-H "X-Data-Provider: fetchin"Our docs' LinkedIn Profile API page has all three providers' requests and answers, field by field. Run the same call on each row of a CSV in Python or Node.js.
The data co-op
Datacircle is a data co-op. Step 1: Query your favorite B2B data APIs through us. Same request, same price, no markup. Step 2: You're DONE. Every morning, you get the flat file of your data plus everyone else's. Add $50 to your account: you get $50 of API PLUS the flat file. See what's in the co-op's daily file.
Questions
Is there an unofficial LinkedIn API?
Several. Open source libraries such as linkedin-api for Python and linkedin-private-api for Node.js sign in to LinkedIn as you. Hosted APIs take an API key and charge per profile. We pass your request to a LinkedIn profile API.
Can LinkedIn ban my account for using an unofficial LinkedIn API?
The libraries warn you themselves. linkedin-private-api's README says: "Note that using this API might cause your account being banned." linkedin-api's says using it "might violate LinkedIn's Terms of Service". Through Datacircle, you use no LinkedIn account.
Can I get another member's profile from LinkedIn's own API?
Only if LinkedIn approves you. Its Profile API page says: "The use of this API is restricted to those developers approved by LinkedIn."
Do I need a LinkedIn account?
No. You send the profile's URL with your Datacircle key: no LinkedIn login, no cookies, no browser.
Is each request live, or cached?
Live. Each request goes to the provider and gets the profile as it is today.
How much does a LinkedIn profile cost?
$2.375 per 1,000 through Up2Data (a profile it can't find is free), $3.70 per 1,000 through HarvestAPI. $1.485 per 1,000 through Fetchin, a profile it can't find billed the same. HarvestAPI bills a profile it can't find at $2.30 per 1,000.
Is there a daily limit?
Up2Data takes $1 a day per account (421 profiles), with a shared daily limit for all customers, then answers 429 until 00:00 UTC. HarvestAPI has no daily limit. Fetchin has no daily limit either.
